This edition of Mixology is presented by Vessels.

Evanescence - Your Star

I will bring up this song whenever I possibly can. The entire build up to the big epic ending is a huge reason why I love writing songs like that and why I love writing my own version of big epic endings.

Cradle of Filth - Babalon A.D.

This song really spoke to me as a teenager. There’s something about the eerie intro and overall vibe of this song with the music video that has stuck with me since. I wouldn’t be surprised if I indirectly pulled inspiration from this when creating more eerie sections.

Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the Great Apocalypse

This insanely epic song is probably my favorite Dimmu song ever. Talk about massive sounding symphonies.

Advent Sorrow - Before the Dimming Light

This EP as a whole is something I regularly come back to as a great example of the type of symphonic black metal that I adore most.

Abigail Williams - Floods

This album really influenced me a lot growing up. Finding this at such a young age felt like finding pure gold. Still a gem.

Apostasy - Sulphur Injection

Anyone else first hear this song in Brutal Legend? That game was certainly very influential for me hearing a handful of symphonic black metal songs, especially the ones from smaller artists I had never heard, like this one. Still a favorite.

The Agonist - Chlorpromazine

Let’s talk about the bridge and ending to this song. “Lullabies For The Dormant Mind” is still a huge favorite of mine but every time I hear the bridge into the outro for this, I get chills. The small symphonic elements just really elevate everything.

Winterhorde - The Heart of Coryphee

A lot of my choices come from albums where I already love every song but one stands out the most (which is what is listed here). This song is how you do a long song well. This is how you make it feel like nothing is over used, too long, or forced just to make the song longer. This song is such a wonderful journey that I greatly enjoy going on and it’s just so damn beautiful.

Clint Mansell - Leaving Earth

If you’ve played Mass Effect, you’ll know this song. It’s tied in so heavily with the far more bleak scenes of the game and because of that, this very simple piano hook holds a lot of weight. I adore simplicity when it’s able to capture such strong emotion so this is certainly an inspiration for writing.

Fallujah - Lacuna

This song isn’t a direct inspiration but rather it’s an inspiration for a similar reason to “Leaving Earth”. The simplicity of the lead that comes a bit later in the song is what makes me adore it so so much. That’s something about Scott as a writer that I’ve enjoyed and admired is his ability (despite how much crazy technical stuff he can play) to make a very simple hook that carries such strong emotion.
