2026 marks the final chapter in the 32-year story of M-Town rebels Backfire!, one of Europe’s most dedicated and respected hardcore bands. To commemorate their iconic run, they will release a mini-album The Last Confession on 20 March 2026 via WTF Records on CD, vinyl, and digital platforms.
Formed in the spring of 1994 by four friends in Maastricht, Netherlands, united by their mutual interest in hardcore, Backfire! made their mark early with the scene-changing debut album Rebel for Life in 1996. The band then toured extensively, sharing stages with hardcore legends such as Warzone, Madball, and Biohazard while appearing at festivals such as Groezrock, With Full Force, Hellfest, European Hardcore, Revolution Calling, and Black & Blue Superbowl in New York City.
The band’s history has also been disrupted by tragedy. On March 20, 1999, drummer and founding member Richard took his own life, leaving friends and family in shock. After months of reflection, Backfire! chose to continue, bringing Igor (Homethrust) behind the drum kit, and paid tribute to Richard with the album Still Dedicated.
Over the years, Backfire! continued to deliver uncompromising hardcore records while maintaining a fierce live reputation worldwide. Their 2003 album Change the Game was a milestone for them: recorded in Brooklyn, produced by Mike Dijan (Breakdown) and Math Henderson (Madball, Agnostic Front), and featuring guest appearances from Freddy Madball and Billy Graziadei (Biohazard). The record fulfilled a dream for the band with shows at the legendary CBGB in NYC.
Following several lineup changes, a stable formation emerged in 2012 with the addition of Harm and Giel (both ex-No Turning Back), later joined in 2021 by drummer Kobus (Hometown Crew). This era carried the band through releases such as In Harm’s Way, My Broken World, Where We Belong, and the 2023 full-length Angry God, produced by former drummer Igor.
In 2024, original member and longtime frontman Pat stepped back from the intensity of touring and band life. Marco (Violation of Trust / Payback) stepped in on vocals, performing at international festivals including Full Rewind and Pitfest.
In December 2025, guitarist Wyb revealed that Backfire! had quietly been working on new material. The result is The Last Confession, a mini-album and the final release to clsoe the book on more than three decades of dedicated hardcore. Across five tracks, Backfire! stay true to the way they live, delivering loud, furious bursts of hardcore reinforced with metallic weight. Even at full speed, empowering singalongs and punchy hooks cut through, bringing more vigour to the songs.
Before the final curtain falls, the band will take the stage one last time to thank the friends, family, and fans who have stood with them throughout their journey.
