With a thousand cuts to our spirit and dignity they attempt to bleed us dry. Their titanic hunger for power and wealth and dominance in all its repugnant forms is never satisfied. While we teach our children to live with honour and integrity they plunder, rape and murder, grasping desperately for more food than they could ever eat, more money than they could ever spend; broken souls sating their every sordid desire and indulging every perversion their vicious little minds can imagine. But we are many and they are few. Never despair and never surrender, never abandon your beliefs and never relinquish the power of your free will!
Free Will is the magnificent debut album from the UK’s War Grave, following boldly in the wake of their critically acclaimed, self titled 2024 EP. Every promise made by that exciting first collection has been fulfilled and every standard surpassed. Beginning with the introductory ‘The Foreshadowing’, which builds atmosphere and anticipation, layer by layer, Free Will then explodes into its title track and an incredible metal ride begins. Fierce energy, superb, soaring vocals, dynamic riffs and rhythms and outstanding solos are unleashed in a glorious celebratory torrent. War Grave are stepping forward as new standard bearers for British metal! From the savage riffs of ‘Night Hunter’ and the uplifting power metal anthem, first single ‘Break These Chains’, to the accomplished, vital and vibrant ‘Only Here And Now’ the consistency of quality that runs throughout Free Will is remarkable. There is not a song on this characterful yet cohesive album that doesn’t deserve holding up for praise. ‘Light ‘Em Up’ is a tragic tale of the old west where the melancholy imagery bleeds through into the music, while ‘Rise Of The Titans’ is a metal colossus that sums up everything that is so appealing and impressive about War Grave. And the guitar solos…throughout the album the lead work is absolutely exemplary, up there with the metal greats. Free Will is a stunning debut album that establishes War Grave as one of the most exciting young bands around today. Watch them fly!
Charlie Wilson Jnr. (Torchbearer, Graven Image etc) at London’s Monolith Studios was once again in charge of capturing the War Grave sound – and Free Will is imbued with all the effervescent energy of the first EP, but with added depth and texture, reflecting the quality and maturity of these new songs. Complete with detailed and intriguing artwork from long term collaborator Heribertus M Miftakhuddin, aka Speedwhore (Dead House, Sunsetter etc), Free Will be released on September 26th…and with new warriors like War Grave stepping into the battle lines, heavy metal will never be defeated!
