London-based black metal quartet Unmother return with their most confrontational and experimental work to date. Their new full-length album, State Dependent Memory, will be released on February 20, with physical editions available on vinyl and cassette via Fiadh Productions.

Formed in 2019 by members of Those Damn Thieves, Formless Body, and Dothe, Unmother have steadily carved out a distinct identity within the UK underground. Their sound fuses traditional black metal with post-metal tension and experimental structures, channeling bleak, urban atmospheres rather than pastoral mysticism.

Their 2021 debut LP Lay Down The Sun, released through True Cult Records, was met with strong acclaim across the underground, establishing the band as a restless and forward-thinking presence within the scene.

With State Dependent Memory, Unmother push further into uneasy territory. For this release, vocal duties are handled by V. (VOAK), marking a significant shift in both approach and expression. The album leans heavily into experimental sound design and production while retaining the core intensity and hostility that defined the band’s earlier work. The album examines urban isolation, inner dislocation, and moral decline, reflecting a world formed by concrete environments and social erosion instead of mythological or natural imagery.

Sonically, the album is dense, oppressive, and confrontational, black metal refracted through an urban lens, where atmosphere and abrasion coexist. The record also includes a striking cover of a track by Greek synthwave legends ΟΔΟΣ 55, further underlining Unmother’s willingness to challenge genre boundaries.

State Dependent Memory was mixed in London by Angeliki Mourgela and mastered by Roland Rodas at Cavern of Echoes Studio. As with their debut, drum performances were recorded by Krzysztof Klingbein, ensuring continuity amid the band’s evolving sound.
