Belfast metal outfit Survivalist have released their explosive interpretation of Slipknot’s iconic single “(Sic)” originally featured on Slipknot’s groundbreaking self-titled 1999 album. The new release, produced by Josh Sid Robinson of JSR Audio, sees the band taking on a cornerstone of modern heavy music and reimagining it through their own hardened, groove-driven lens.
Formed in Belfast, Survivalist is a four-piece metal act featuring:
Gavin Sharp (vocals), Nick Butcher (guitars), Lee Shaw (bass), and Rhys Fraser (drums).
Blending massive riffs, melodic layers, and devastating breakdowns, the band define their sound as a unique fusion of Metalcore / Deathcore / Groove, shaped by personal challenges, real-world struggle, and musical evolution.
Survivalist first made their impact with their 2021 debut album “VII,” which has now surpassed 100,000 streams and earned widespread critical acclaim for its intensity, emotion, and modern yet nostalgic metal edge.
Reviews include:
10/10 – Rock ‘N’ Load Magazine
9/10 – Evermetal
8/10 – Powerplay
The band widened their profile significantly with the single “Greater Negative,” a raw and vulnerable exploration of trauma and recovery that earned extended international radio support, including BBC Radio, as well as a prime-time TV appearance on Channel 5, interviewed by Gaby Roslin & Ortis Deley.
Survivalist have also built a growing reputation onstage, performing alongside major heavyweights including Chelsea Grin, Polaris, Suffocation, Atreyu, Kublai Khan, Distant, and more. With a major tour supporting Thy Art Is Murder and Heriot during October 2025, their momentum is stronger than ever.
Their forthcoming album, “A Place For Those Who Suffer, Alone…”, has already been introduced through the well-received singles “Deathbed” featuring Alex Koehler (ex–Chelsea Grin / Ameonna) and “Radio Bleed.” Both tracks have surpassed 10,000 streams, featured in over 50 press outlets and radio stations worldwide, including play on Kerrang Radio and features in Devolution Magazine and Metal Hammer Spain. Which has helped set the stage for the next wave of their evolution. The album will also feature a guest appearance from Kid Bookie.
With their new cover of Slipknot’s “(Sic)” Survivalist pay homage to a metal classic while delivering something distinctly their own-darker, heavier, and tailored for a modern audience.
Vocalist Gavin Sharp says:
“Slipknot has been a huge influence on every member of this band from the very beginning. They were one of the first heavy acts we connected with as kids—blasting through skateparks, shaping our tastes, and eventually inspiring elements of our own sound, from DJ scratching to even tuning the guitars on our first album the same way they did. As a titan of modern metal, Slipknot helped define the genre’s evolution, and we’ve grown up watching their journey—from lineup changes to the losses of Paul Gray and Joey Jordison—always progressing naturally while staying unmistakably themselves. Covering (sic) is our way of paying tribute to a band that helped shape who we are, both as musicians and as people.”
Survivalist define their own brand of vicious intensity with a sound they call “Groovecore.” Rooted in personal experience, emotional honesty, and a deep love for heavy music, their sound blends raw aggression with melodic catharsis and relentless energy.
