"Spirits," the latest offering from Durham, N.C. doom/sludge metal band DOOMSDAY PROFIT, opens with a pun.
"The spirits in my glass/ Can't chase away the ghosts," hollers frontman Bryan Reed.
It's a sly bit of deflection at the front of a song that delves into more introspective territory than the band has yet ventured.
With its play on words and the grooving stoner-rock riff that drives the melodic hook, "Spirits" is, on one hand, a catchy stoner-sludge offering that ought to appeal to fans of Bongzilla or Black Tusk. But on the other, that playful catchiness belies the self-excoriation that reveals itself in the song's lyrics.
"With that play on the word 'spirits,' we were diving head first into a thematic territory we hadn't explored much," Reed says. Inspired in part by the bleakness and self-loathing themes of bands like Buzzov•en and Grief, Reed adds, "The song ended up digging into that feeling of being haunted by past mistakes, and wanting to do anything possible to let go of the shame and regret."
Ultimately, "Spirits" has proven to be one of the most cathartic songs in DOOMSDAY PROFIT's live set, and is now available to stream and share in its recorded version.
