The track is taken from their forthcoming full-length album Apparitions , set for release on April 25th via Cadaver Audio Recordings .

Formed in 2020 under a different name, Percipient weathered early lineup changes and a brief hiatus before re-emerging in 2022 with a revitalized vision and their current moniker — a name that reflects their fascination with paranormal themes and their obscured, atmospheric sonic approach.

The band explains:

“Originally formed in 2020 under a different name, the band endured a series of lineup changes and a brief hiatus before re-emerging with a refined vision. In 2022, they adopted the name Percipient — a reflection of their paranormal lyrical themes and obscure, atmospheric sound.”

With a now solidified lineup and a clearer creative voice, Percipient ’s music has evolved into something deeply expressive, emotionally crushing, and eerily transcendent. Their debut album, Apparitions , is a multifaceted journey through grief, control, the supernatural, and existential torment.

Prior to “Portals,” the band released the chilling first single “Marionette,” which delivered a disorienting descent into madness. The track’s gritty vocal delivery, wailing guitar work, and unnerving dissonance conveyed a harrowing narrative of possession and despair — a man turned into a puppet by an evil force, fighting for control amid a symphony of spectral chaos.

Now, “Portals” takes listeners further into Apparitions ’ haunted world. The track expresses profound sorrow and longing, as the protagonist mourns the loss of a loved one and yearns to be reunited through a portal into death itself. It’s a mesmerizing blend of brooding doom and atmospheric death metal, drawing comparisons to genre visionaries like Officium Triste . The performance is soul-crushing yet melodic, immersive yet brutal — another striking chapter in the band’s unfolding story.
