Based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Aspen Sanctum blend the atmosphere and intensity of black metal with influences drawn from Midwestern U.S. music, post-hardcore and Americana. The band’s debut release, To Withhold the Need to Conquer, arrives on August 7th, 2026 through a self-release alongside a cassette edition supported by Fiadh Productions.
Founded by Jared Koons, Jeremy Cronk, Tim Wicklund and Bryan Neterer, Aspen Sanctum build their sound around expansive chord progressions, relentless rhythm work and melodic passages that sit naturally beside harsher black metal elements. The album moves between grinding bass lines, sharp guitar work and layered atmospheric sections without losing its forward momentum.
The band’s name reflects the landscapes and seasons of the American Midwest. “Aspen” points toward the forests and changing colours of the region, while “Sanctum” evokes a secluded and sacred place shaped by nature rather than human control. That connection to the Northwoods, the Great Lakes region and the wider Midwest runs throughout the album.
Written between November 2024 and December 2025 and recorded during the early months of 2026, To Withhold the Need to Conquer is the band’s first release and introduces a sound that balances aggression, atmosphere and melody without leaning fully into any one direction.
