As the cold dead fingers of black metal prised open the gates of the global metal music scene in the 1990s, it seemed that in every territory hordes of those who had sold their souls to the darkness emerged from tombs and mausoleums, ready to wage war on the heavens. In the UK one of the bands that stood in the vanguard of hell’s newly spawned legions was Thus Defiled. They raised their standard of rebellion in 1993 with two notorious demos – Blasphemous Coven and Enchanted By The Dark One – before unleashing two albums of venomous desecration that the fallen angels of the underground clasped to their frost bitten hearts: Through The Impure Veil Of Dawn and Wings Of The Nightstorm. Having been unavailable for years, these two arcane artefacts of black metal history are about to be summoned from their unquiet graves…

Originally released in 1995 Through The Impure Veil Of Dawn is a fierce album of primal savagery and windswept atmosphere, combining epic metal thunder with an aura of black magic and nefarious deeds. It’s a radically different album from the masterful precision of Thus Defiled’s later works, the satanic strikes of Daemonspawn and Weeping Holocaust Tears, but it possesses a fire and earnest ambition that could never be replicated. Featuring timeless tracks like ‘Fear Us For We Are The Darkness’, Through The Impure Veil Of Dawn was a dramatic announcement of Thus Defiled’s arrival on the field of battle. There is a marked development between Through The Impure Veil Of Dawn and its 1997 successor, Wings Of The Nightstorm. Thus Defiled’s distinct sound was rising through the dark chaos and crystallising into the sharp, accomplished, melodic, metallic attack they became renowned for. As the band’s musicianship had become more accomplished, so the songs became more complex and intricate, steeped in grandeur and creative endeavour, while still retaining that vicious edge of wickedness. Look no further than ‘Empire Of Souls Bleeding’ for evidence of Thus Defiled’s ever increasing potency and power. The two albums have retained their ability to shock and thrill with their devilish dynamics and driving force and remain emphatic statements of black metal’s early determination to wreak havoc and tear down the throne of god.

Vic Records will rerelease Through The Impure Veil Of Dawn and Wings Of The Nightstorm on November 28th; both faithfully restored and remastered by Thus Defiled front man Paul C., both with extensive liner notes from Officium Triste’s Pim Blankenstein and both with bonus tracks drawn from recently uncovered 1994 rehearsal tapes – including songs that have never been made available before. Revisit the dark days of black metal’s church burning ascendency and walk in the twilight shadows of Thus Defiled once more…
