“The Last Magic in Practice”, the second album of Finnish melodic death metal outfit Nemecic, is an onslaught of double bass, down-tuned guitars, traditional guitar solos and a mix of growled and clean vocals. While the band’s style is not reminiscent of any single group, but one can hear hints of Fear Factory, Lamb of God and Katatonia on the songs of the band’s sophomore effort. The album was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Juho Räihä (Swallow the Sun, Before the Dawn, Gloria Morti).
For their second album, Nemecic have widened their musical horizons. Vocalist Aki Salonen, who made his debut on the group’s 2019 single “Wardenclyffe” is now fully off the leash, and for the first time guitarist Tuomo Salonen also steps up to the mic. While clean vocals are present on the album - as they were on the band’s 2017 debut “The Deathcantation” – clean singing is not the main attraction this time around either.
The main theme of “The Last Magic in Practice” is creativity in all its forms. The album’s lyrics (written by drummer Niko Anttila) are perhaps slightly more profound than those of your average metal record: the band uses the means of mythology, Western occultism and magic to deal with the subjects of self-expression, the need to create and one’s desire to leave their mark on the world. On their second full-length, Nemecic are attempting to steer clear of the most generic metal elements while still providing bone-crushing heaviness and moments of melodic greatness.
