Warhog: Top Ten Influential Tracks
Ashes In Your Mouth, Megadeth
With Countdown, Mustaine really moves forward as a writer. Ashes has strong, meaningful verses and catchy choruses. The riffs have great energy and are lifted by blistering harmonies and solos. It’s a great template for writing that we’ve used over and over.
Crazy Train, Ozzy Osbourne
Randy Rhoads wrote a year’s worth of music lessons in this 5-minute classic. It’s got tension and release over and over as the song flies by. Crazy Train is a great song to learn, listen to, play live, or watch someone else perform. It’s perfect, that’s why it endures.
Ilyena, The Mars Volta
Ilyena’s incredible progression, layered textures, and raw energy are a reminder of how rhythm and sound can evoke chaos and beauty simultaneously. We bring this passion and dynamism to our music, creating moments that hit hard emotionally and sonically.
Orion, Metallica
As younger musicians, this was such a paradigm shift for how we looked at the role of the bass in a rock band. Not only does the bass take the lead (figuratively and literally), it’s also a great instrumental. In the absence of verse and chorus, you’ve still got an all time vibe.
Could This Be the End, Brendon Small
Small is a creative genius in animation and music with his storytelling and this song is an inspired mix of both. The way his blending of vocal styles and melodic guitar work pulls you in and inspires us to write songs that are a transformative, storytelling experience.
The Trees, Rush
Storytelling and metaphor are big parts of our music and The Trees is a classic example of both. Musically, it sets a mood with such accuracy that when the vocals start, you never question the lyrics. There is unrest in the forest, trouble with the trees…
Rocket Skates, Deftones
Rocket Skates is a masterclass in endurance. Cunningham is an artist who’s been crafting rhythms for decades and continues to push the envelope. This song is raw, visceral, and dynamic and embodies the balance between precision and chaos.
Bombtrack, Rage Against the Machine
This song is just a great, heavy groove. The guitar and bass driving in unison sounds so good and sometimes that’s all you need to kick someone in the teeth. Bombtrack is a thumping, rhythmic attack. No frills, all rock.
Revelations, Iron Maiden
There’s so much music packed into this 7-minute ballad/banger. It’s an example of how a band can transcend itself when given the right momentum and create something really powerful and moving while also being true to the core of what they’re about. Heavy and haunting.
I’m Broken, Pantera
At the end of the day, we’re from Dallas and you can’t deny the legacy of Pantera. This is the song you think of when groove metal is mentioned. Dime’s solo and the breakdown at the end are undeniable and this track is a go to when channeling the brain’s riffage cortex.
Bonus Track:
Children of the Grave, Black Sabbath
This one needs no explanation. Heavy metal 101.
