Emerging from the darkness of the Russian underground in 2002, Grond spent a number of years settling on a strong and steady line-up, honing their skills and refining their sound with relentless live performances. 2010 saw the release of the Steel Coffins EP and this was followed by their 2013 full length debut album, Howling From The Deep. After another EP, Cosmic Devonian, Grond caught the ear of international metal label, Xtreem Music, who signed the band for the release of their well-received second album, Worship The Kraken in 2016. Despite the critical acclaim afforded Worship The Kraken, with respected media outlets like Teeth Of The Divine, Dead Rhetoric and The Metal Crypt praising Grond’s monstrous heaviness and superlative use of atmosphere, little has been heard from the band since its release. A split album with Dutch death/doom band Graceless in 2019 – Endless Spiral Of Terror – the only sound of life…until now. There are noises in the deep once more, stirrings in the lightless depths…Grond’s new album, The Temple, is about to be unveiled!

The Temple is a brilliant concept album that entwines H.P. Lovecraft’s typically unnerving short story of the same name, with the military career and death at sea of decorated German U-boat commander Otto Eduard Weddigen. Grond’s thunderous death metal and mastery of claustrophobic, fear filled atmosphere perfectly captures both the fire and thunder of naval warfare and the strange mysteries of a submerged Atlantean city. With tempos shifting from a rumbling war machine to an incendiary blast and brilliant lead work circling like sharks around crushing, masterful riffs and a voice of guttural, overwhelming power, Grond have distilled the essence of death metal and infused it with their own subaquatic horror. The song writing is excellent, immersive and imaginative, be it the slow-motion force of ‘Dreadnought’ summoning the spirit of an 18,000 ton, heavily armed warship or the lurching riffs of ‘The Temple’ that conjure the awe-inspiring, sanity destroying impossibility of ancient monuments beneath the waves. Tracks like the ‘Radiant Fury’ – implacable domination and elemental chaos – and the magnificently atmospheric ‘Dark Solitude Of The Sea’ are death metal invocations of the very highest order and magnitude. With The Temple, Grond have presented a comeback album of staggering quality.

Working once more with the champions of the metal underground, Xtreem Music, Grond will release The Temple on CD and digital formats on April 30th. Swathed in the majestic artwork of one-time Grond bassist, Daemorph (Aborted Fetus, Avulsed, Holycide etc), The Temple is an essential work of pure death metal – a flagship release for the genre in 2026.
