A project of multi-instrumentalist Andy Schoengrund (ex-Embalm, ex-Feral Light), the debut EP from Vanishing Grasp is a well conceptualized take on tried-and-true death metal, while pushing the limits of the genre itself. That may be obvious just from the unconventionality of the collaged cover, but that too is revealing what lurks within: sculpted rhythmic churn colliding with off kilter riffs and raspy Ross Dolan style vocals. Vanishing Grasp shares some molecular structure with Immolation in parts, but takes it to otherworldly realms and unexpected directions, the ambient interludes and interspersions casting a gray and ominous hue broadly across its 7 tracks.
