Alternative/avant-garde metal unit FLAGMAN is set to release its newest EP, Before the Blast.
Based in Seattle and riddled with ADHD, FLAGMAN has carved out its own niche in the metal community with a sound best described as “the lovechild of Primus, Mike Patton, and System of a Down.”
Those words come to life with one spin of the EP's first single, "The Punishment Committee," now streaming on all major platforms.
Frontman/songwriter Sam Stewart comments on the EP and its lead single, "This EP is the first that I've written and recorded almost exclusively myself so a lot of it was born out of me messing around with new gear and new software for the first time. I was listening to a lot of Ministry and Nailbomb and industrial music - checking out other artists that head up a 'band,' but it's really just one or two people creating everything in the studio. I threw myself into the process, and this is what came out the other side. I wanted something really aggressive and immediate, both musically and lyrically. I had the phrase 'I'll show you something you won't ever forget' rattling around in my head, and it felt like a perfect fit for the song's vibe.
Lyrically, it was inspired by a lot of personal upheaval in my life that also felt like it was reflected in the world, both presently and in the past. This song and EP are a result of that experimentation and soldiering forward in the face of an uncertain future, something that we all come up against, and really something that you're always facing - any plans or ideas of the future you might have are really just fantasies that we hang our hopes on. "
Stream "The Punishment Committee" on Bandcamp, Spotify and Apple Music.
Despite various lineup changes, touring challenges, and the many other hurdles that accompany bands in the modern age, FLAGMAN has spent the last 10 years living the 'never say die' mantra. The band has built a reputation based on a boundary-pushing approach to songwriting and explosive live performances, sharing the stage with acts such as Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Battles, Man On Man, Melvinator, Hed PE, and more.
With Before the Blast, the band leans heavily into the avant-garde tendencies, weaving angular riffs, manic rhythms, and industrial flair into an experience that is both urgent and unhinged.
Before the Blast is due out October 17. Follow FLAGMAN on LinkTree for more updates.
