Nordic Embryogenesis begins with ‘Expunging Mortalities’, a track taken from the second, 1990 demo of Finnish band Funebre. It’s gloriously sinister, choking on the effluvia of the grave and haunted by superb guitar melody lines. Here, Avulsed set out their mission statement for Nordic Embryogenesis. This album is not about taking old songs and polishing them up for modern tastes with contemporary recording quality. This is about transporting the listener back in time, digging up rotten corpses, exhuming dry and dust swathed bones and infusing them with necromantic life. This is reanimation, not reinvention! Capturing the wild, raw chaos of tracks like Carbonized’s ‘No Canonization’ or Adramelech’s ‘Heroes In Godly Blaze’ is a remarkable feat of drive and determination – and the atmosphere that rises like cemetery mist from every song, Macabre End’s ‘Spawn Of Flesh’ to Crematory’s ‘The Exordium’ is magnificent! These songs are so good and every death metal fan owes Avulsed a debt of gratitude for bearing these desiccated corpses, with such reverence, back into the light. Dave Rotten’s vocal performance is awesome, the meticulous care applied to every flesh-ripping riff breathtaking…the true essence of death metal can be found right here.
