Brazilian Thrash/Death Metal juggernaut Faces of Death — active since the early ’90s and long regarded as one of Brazil’s most relevant underground forces — return with a ferocious new strike: the single and video “Terror em Barbacena”.
Tracked at Audiolab Extreme Studios in Taubaté, São Paulo, and produced, mixed, and mastered by the band alongside longtime collaborator and ex-drummer Niko Teixeira, the release captures Faces of Death at their heaviest and most uncompromising to date.
Marking the first studio cut with the current lineup—founding brothers Laurence Miranda (vocals/guitar) and Sylvio Miranda (bass) now joined by Maurício Filho (guitar) and Igor Nogueira (drums)—the song channels the raw, unfiltered aggression of early ’90s Death Metal while injecting the razor-edged Thrash intensity that has become the band’s trademark.
Following the live EP Thrash disConcert and their acclaimed 2023 full-length Evil, Faces of Death sharpen their attack into something darker, more technical, and mercilessly violent.
Lyrically, “Terror em Barbacena” dives into one of Brazil’s most disturbing historical wounds: the horrors of the Barbacena Psychiatric Hospital in Minas Gerais. Known as the “Brazilian Holocaust”, more than 60,000 patients died behind its walls as a result of systematic abuse, torture, and neglect. The song is a brutal denunciation of these atrocities.
“We wanted maximum aggression and weight to mirror the unimaginable suffering endured by those patients”, says Laurence. “It was an environment akin to a Nazi concentration camp, and society simply looked the other way”, comments Laurence Miranda.
