Formed in 2017, by the end of that same year Wyrdstæf had been seen on British national television, appearing on Channel 4’s Britain’s Most Historic Towns, bringing to life the historic Icelandic family saga ‘Egil’s Saga’ in furious, unbridled fashion, as the show explored Viking heritage. Right from the start Wyrdstæf were making an impact, speaking to the spirit of those who witnessed their passionate, ritualistic performances. However, for Wyrdstæf, their soul belonged to a time long before the Viking raiders ravaged English shores. Their vision is rooted in the forgotten, prehistoric world, the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic ages when early man wandered a terrifying, magnificent paradisical world, hunter-gatherers amongst its untarnished and unforgiving majesty. In 2021 they released their first EP, Great Migrations, a bleak meditation upon ancestral movement and the threat of extinction – described by the respected Ave Noctum zine as “raw, uncivilized but bound by its own flow and its own spirits.” Wyrdstæf’s unique blend of layered throat singing, distorted guitars, field recordings and ritualistic chants, of extreme, blackened metal and shamanistic aura was flourishing, evolving, transcending. In 2025 they signed with Apocalyptic Witchcraft, label head Conor Droney recalling, “from the moment I first heard Wyrdstæf, it was clear they were something truly unique. Their sound evokes the ancient, the forgotten, and the primal.” And now the band are ready to reveal their first full length album, a work of hypnotic, enthralling power – Primordial Bloodlines.
With its intoxicating chants and primal rhythms ‘White Spring’ opens the gateway to the world of Wyrdstæf, a consuming invocation of a place that exists on the borders of dream and memory, a time older than myth whose reality resonates deep within us. It’s a bleak, harsh world, where death is always near and its deep darknesses and breathtaking beauty are brought to incredibly vibrant life by epic, textured tracks like ‘Hyperborean’ and ‘Parhelion’, as they summon the ghosts of prehistory to walk by our side. Be it through the biting winds and icy blackened metal of ‘Great Migrations’ or through ‘Primordial Bloodlines’ lament for and reflection upon a world unruined by man, still ruled by the immense megafauna and whims of nature, Wyrdstæf can open doors in the willing mind. In the words of the band themselves, “this is a way of reflecting on and channelling the primordial origins of humanity”. The echoes of our earliest ancestry can be heard calling out from every note, every utterance, every invocation.
Primordial Bloodlines’ gifts will be offered up by Apocalyptic Witchcraft on September 4th, on limited edition splatter vinyl, digipak CD, Cassette and digital formats – receive them with open heart, open mind and willing spirit.
