Technical death metal outfit ALLEGAEON will unleash their new full-length, The Ossuary Lens, on April 4th on Metal Blade Records, today unveiling the record’s first single, “Driftwood.”
For ALLEGAEON, remaining idle is not an option. The Colorado band thrives on chaos and change. Their latest album, The Ossuary Lens, is their seventh overall and the first with original vocalist Ezra Haynes since he left in 2015. His return is a significant moment for the band.
The clean vocal style in the last three albums was a refreshing change, but Haynes’ gravelly voice adds excitement to this new album, which is both brutal and technically impressive. The science-themed lyrics complement the complex music, creating powerful songs. Haynes calls their style "melotech" which combines melodic, technical death metal.
Guitarist Greg Burgess explains that the band started with a more straightforward sound but gradually added technical and progressive influences, along with ambient elements. The Ossuary Lens was recorded with producer Dave Otero at Flatline Audio, marking their sixth collaboration. Both Haynes and Burgess appreciate his contributions to their sound.
The album showcases a strong balance between intensity and melody, described as their most cohesive work yet. The lyrics focus on different perspectives of death, with each song exploring various themes tied to this concept. The title, The Ossuary Lens, reflects these multiple viewpoints.
The first single, “Driftwood,” holds special significance, originally written by their bassist Booboo for an earlier album. After some rearranging, it fits seamlessly into their current sound, illustrating the band's philosophy of not discarding ideas.
