"Whatness of Allhorse" is the second single to land from the experimental metal trio AGENBITE MISERY, in advance of their approaching new album Remorse of Consciousness that is set to arrive on February 6th, 2026. "Whatness of Allhorse" provides a further glimpse into AGENBITE MISERY's entwining of music and literature through their genre-defying literary adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses. The official visualizer for the track is available HERE.
An abrasive, eerie, yet highly compelling sonic experience awaits in "Whatness of Allhorse". The instrumental arrangement sees post-punk and industrial reimagined through a heavy metal lens. The steadfast, metallic and mechanic nature of the drum machine breaks through a soundscape of horror inspired synths. Inhuman, monotone spoken vocals contrast intensely with the sharp monstrous character of harsh screams. The chaos subsides temporarily to bring the spoken narrative into focus, before it is drowned out amidst a discordant and untamed climax.
The song adapts section 9 of Ulysses, “Scylla and Charybdis,” a scene in which Stephen Daedalus debates Shakespearean theory with literary elites. Finding himself heavily critiqued on all accounts, Daedalus offers increasingly absurd explanations to his peers. The act of debate itself becomes of more importance than the exchange of knowledge. The chaotic freedom of that conversation translates into a song full of abstract and bold choices, and layered absurdity.
"Whatness of Allhorse" was self-recorded and produced by the band, with mixing by Eric Sauter and mastering by Brad Boatright. It is the first of five singles to be released ahead of Remorse of Conscience, which arrives February 6, 2026.
AGENBITE MISERY formed with a mission to translate great literary works into modern sonic languages. Their upcoming debut draws directly from Joyce’s Ulysses, with each track adapting a specific chapter using genre-spanning metal composition and lyrics lifted from the original text. The result is a sprawling, ambitious, and unapologetically cerebral journey through some of the most emotionally dense terrain ever attempted in heavy music.
