Náttligr Album release "Ravatal"

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Náttligr is a Norwegian black/doom metal band with folk influences, founded in 2019 by T. K. on guitars/vocals and L.-I. S. on bass, in the ancient northern city of Trondheim. L. L. later joined on drums, forming the recording lineup for the band’s debut album, Ravatal. Produced between 2020 and 2023 not far from Nidarosdomen, using old-school recording techniques, the album’s sound harkens back to classic 90s albums – for example, Storm’s Nordavind and Ulver’s Nattens Madrigal. Stylistically, there is a wide range of influences mainly from black and doom metal, with some added folk elements. Bethlehem, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Candlemass, Isengard, the different eras of Bathory, Windir, Darkthrone, and other old Norwegian masters are among the influences, but there are also occasional nods to Norwegian and Hungarian folk music, as well as to the heavier material of Thy Catafalque.

Ravatal takes the listener through a wide range of riff-oriented soundscapes. From blistering black metal fury, through grandiose and heavy doom metal sections, to gentler clean and acoustic passages. This is complemented by T. K.’s varied vocal approach – black metal shrieks, different types of clean singing and even death metal growls can all be heard on the record. The cover art rounds all of this out – a watercolor painting by K. B. – perfectly encapsulating the dark, old-school atmosphere of the record, while also paying tribute to the band’s hometown. She also made the hand-drawn logo.

The lineup of the band also includes I. V., an electric cello player. She is adding low, apocalyptic, distorted sounds to live settings and is expected to make her recorded debut in the future.
